The Gatsby "Secret Society" Credo Activity




In Fitzgerald's novel, class struggle in America is portrayed as an intensely personal affiar, as much a tension within the mind of a single character as a conflict between characters. During his eveing at the Buchanan's house, Nick Carraway says Daisy "looked at [him] with an absolute smirk on her lovely face as if she had asserted her membership in a rather distinguished secret society to which she and Tom belonged" (22).

Credo: As a group, you created a credo for this "secret society" based on what you read in the text. In your groups, you discussed the characteristics of this "secret society" and decided which characters are allowed membership and which are not.

What are the characteristics of this society?
How does one become a member?
How is one supposed to act once admitted as a member?

    The characteristics of the society that we came up with are wealthy people. The people that are in this ‘secret society’ are all rich that’s what they thrive on. They are bored with their life because they either did all the activities they wanted or they don’t need to work for their money at all. To become a member it is basically you have to be born into the money, or you have to have a lot of money and you are welcomed in. The way that we believe that people should act one in this secret society is to not like the poor or middle class and to only communicate with the upper rich class of people.

    The "secret society" made based on the text is full of rich "know-it-all's" that love gossiping and having fun. They usually have plenty of free time for other people. One becomes a member by having all or some of the qualities above and just coming in and acting like they belong, or by knowing someone. Connections are pretty important, because it gives them a chance at joining. Once they do become members, it is important to act proud of yourself, have manners, enjoy yourself, and don't bother the "boss" when unnecessary.

    secret society is based on rich people who only know how to be involved in the big fancy life. they only know money and weath, nothing else. all they do is gossip about eachother and who is less rich. to become a member of this secret society, you need to be richer than most. also you need to be born in the richness not married in the rich because being married in the rich, you may not know the exact feeling of being rich. yo are supposed to never talk about the ecret society and never talk about the people in it.

    A secret society is a thing for the rich. Only they know how to be involved in the secret society and they are the only ones that know what goes on. If everyone know what was going on in them it wouldn't be a secret. It is impossible to know what it takes to become a member, only members know and their not telling. I suspect one must act proper and never talk about the inner workings of the group.

    This secret society is based off of a group of people that are extremely wealthy. They were only involved in "wealthy people things". Fancy parties, massive mansions, expensive foods and clothes, and only the best cars. To be in this group you must be incredibly wealthy and must be born into extreme wealth because you would not be able to fit into this group unless you were raised to act like these people. It is very important to act and dress superior to and to show off your wealth

    The characteristic of the society of this is that there are rich and poor people. to go to the parties you have to be rich and wealthy. If the person is rich then they should acted like a rich person and wealthy and also like they like what thy have in life as a rich person.

    People who have developed "old money" are in these secret societies. This secret society is all about not having to work hard all of their life because they already have more then enough money to live off of. In order to be accepted to this elite group, you need to be invited to only the finest, and fanciest parties. Many of the people born into old money are very boring because they have never really had to strive to achieve something special. They just have parties and have a lot of alcohol and everyone gets drunk.

    This "secret society" is the state of mind that the wealthy people have entered after feeling superior to the middle and lower class people for so long. But it's not all wealthy people, it is the old money people. These people have been born into wealthy families, who have been wealthy for generations, and most likely came to this country wealthy, or started out wealthy in the early 1800s. This is a requirement to get in, so no one besides the ones that are born in are allowed to be admitted into this "secret society". Since you are admitted at birth, you are raised how to act, and the way to act is sophisticated, and proper.

    IN these secret societies people throw parties, attend parties, mingle with others and enjoy themselves. People in these groups are peole that were born into money, so there not just a little rivh there set for a few lives. When your a member your suppose to act smart, intelligent, polite and laid back.
